Abstract—The predicted capacity gain of a traditional colocatedMIMO system is often severely limited in realisticpropagation scenarios, especially when the number ofantennas becomes large. Recently, a generalized paradigmfor multiple-antenna communications, distributed MIMO, isproposed as a remedy. In this paper, through asymptoticlarge-system analysis, we provide solid justifications on theadvantages of distributed MIMO over co-located MIMOwhen communication channels are subject to spatialcorrelation and shadow fading. We also exploit inherentmacrodiversity in distributed MIMO to devise a costeffectivelink adaptation scheme that achieves significantperformance gain.
